Since the 1960s, with the rapid development of container transport, various countries have successively developed specialized vehicles for transporting containers. The loading area of container vehicles is sized according to standard container dimensions, and there are locking devices at the corresponding positions of the four corners of the container's bottom to secure the container.

Container vehicles usually adopt a combination form of automobile trains. This combination includes semi-trailer, full trailer, and double trailer, with semi-trailer trains being the most common.
The semi-trailers that make up the container vehicle train come in two types: flatbed and skeletal. The loading area of the flatbed semi-trailer is a flat platform, which can be used for transporting containers as well as ordinary long and large cargo, resulting in higher vehicle utilization efficiency. The loading area of the skeletal semi-trailer is a chassis frame without a platform; once the container is placed on the vehicle and secured by the locking device, it also becomes a strength component of the semi-trailer. Skeletal semi-trailers can only be used for transporting containers. They have advantages such as low self-weight, simple structure, and easy maintenance.
According to structural form, container semi-trailers are divided into straight frame and goose neck types. Straight frame semi-trailers are suitable for transporting flat-bottomed containers; goose neck semi-trailers are specifically designed for transporting containers with recessed bottom structures, which can lower the loading height.
